ICASO Appoints Executive Director
Toronto, Canada – November 16, 2011
The International Council of AIDS Service Organizations announced today that it has appointed Mary Ann Torres to the post of Executive Director.
A veteran HIV activist, Mary Ann has served the organization in a number of capacities over the past ten years. Before taking on the role of Interim Executive Director in July 2011, she was the Senior Policy Advisor-- leading and managing many of ICASO’s flagship programs.
Mary Ann is a lawyer and former Professor of Law from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas, Venezuela and has two Masters’ degrees in law from Indiana University and the University of Toronto.
“Given her strong leadership skills, keen policy acumen, commitment to human rights and in-depth knowledge of the HIV response and of the organization, Mary Ann will be instrumental in realizing ICASO’s bold new vision for 2012-2015”, says Jacqueline Coleman, Chair of the ICASO Board.
Mary Ann is enthusiastic about her new role in steering ICASO in a new strategic direction, even amidst a global economic downturn which has seen donors waiver on their commitments. “We have reached a critical juncture in the HIV response. For the first-time in history, we can actually envision an end to the HIV epidemic and ICASO remains committed to supporting and promoting community responses to the epidemic”.
Founded in 1991, ICASO’s mission is to mobilize and support diverse community organizations to build an effective global response to HIV and AIDS. For more information about ICASO and its activities visit www.icaso.org
