CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: AIDS 2014 Programme Committee Co-Chairs -CLOSED

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Programme Committee Co-Chairs

XX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014)

Background

The biennial International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policymakers, people living with HIV and others committed to ending the epidemic. AIDS 2014 is expected to convene delegates from all around the world.

AIDS2014 is being organized in a partnership between the International AIDS Society (IAS), as the convenor, the international community partners including the Positive Women’s Network (PWN), the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+), the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW), the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO), Sidaction, local Australian and regional partners, UNAIDS and its co-sponsors.

As the Conferences have evolved, so has the planning process.  Increasingly the programme committees (Community, Leadership and Accountability, and Scientific) have a central role in defining the conference programme.  Community involvement is an important part of this evolution of the planning process[1].  As such, the international and regional community partners of the conference are initiating an open call for nominations for the International Programme Committee Co-Chairs.

The purpose of the committees is to provide overall planning and guidance for the development of the Programme at the XX International AIDS Conference in 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. Each committee is comprised of co-chairs) and committee members.

The International Partners will be selecting one of the Co-Chairs for each of the three committees:

  • Community Programme Committee
  • Leadership and Accountability Programme Committee
  • Scientific Programme Committee

Responsibilities

Committee Co-chairs will:

  • Preside over their Programme Committee meetings / conference calls
  • Represent their programme committee on the Conference Coordinating Committee (CCC) and report on their progress and initiatives
  • Share responsibility for chairing roles at the Joint Programme Committee (JPC) Meetings Attend and participate in the Marathon Meeting
  • Be spokespersons for the Conference Programme in collaboration with the Conference Secretariat communications team

The role of committee co-chairs is that of volunteer and there is no remuneration for participating. Travel and related expenses are covered by the conference budget with the exception of members affiliated with sponsoring institutions that have previously agreed to cover costs. Previous committee members have found that the position can be intermittently demanding and requires some dedicated time outside of scheduled meetings (approximately 2-5 hours per week). Co-chairs can expect a slightly increased time commitment. In addition to scheduled meetings there will be frequent email communication and some teleconferences.

Although committee co-chairs will be appointed as individuals they are expected to consult with a wide variety of constituencies and community stakeholders.

[Please note that the call for committee member nominations will be issued later in 2012].

Application Process

Individuals are asked to apply on their own behalf and must complete and return the application form.

The Community Partners of AIDS2014 have established this open call for nominations for the programme committee co-chairs. The partners will submit a shorter final list of nominations for discussion and agreement by the International Partners (IAS – with multiple votes, UNAIDS, PWN, GNP+, ICW, ICASO, Sidaction).

The final selected members of the programme committees will be made public. It will not be possible to reply individually to every applicant.
