The vision of the leadership programme for AIDS 2008 is to provide a platform for leaders from all walks of life to engage in dialogue and debate to identify solutions to the challenges we face in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As such, members of the Leadership Programme Committee have adopted the following platform to guide our planning:
- We believe leadership is defined broadly and includes high-profile and elected officials, as well as community activists working at the grassroots level.
- The leaders who will be invited to participate in the leadership programme will be given a platform because they:
- have a constituency they can mobilize;
- make decisions;
- influence others and have the potential to have an impact on thousands and millions;
- have the credibility and legitimacy to lead; and/or
- inspire and have the ability to bring about change.
- We want to move to action and solutions at AIDS 2008 (from rhetoric to action) and away from a re-statement of the problems.
- We will insist that discussions be based on evidence, not ideology.
- The leadership sessions will be interactive, innovative and dynamic. We plan to push the envelope and will ask leaders to discuss and debate, not to read speeches or reiterate the same old statements.
- Leaders will be held accountable for commitments made…no more empty promises.
- All initiatives and sessions will be developed under the backdrop of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); the call for universal access to treatment, prevention, care and support; and other global, regional and national goals.
OR put another way:
WHO: leaders from all levels and all sectors
WHAT: will come together to find solutions to challenges and barriers
WHY: because they have constituencies they can mobilize; because they are influential; because they make decisions that affect many
HOW: in interactive, dynamic sessions that will stress dialogue and debate
